Traditional Chickpea Azevias combine thin, crisp pastry with a sweet chickpea filling. Crescent-shaped and coated in sugar, they’re a familiar feature of Portuguese confectionery and Christmas tables.

Their characteristic appearance comes from their golden, uneven surface, crimped edges and sugar granules. Inside, chickpeas form the base of a sweet filling that contrasts with the outer pastry.

Also known as chickpea pastries, these azevias are a fixture on tables in southern Portugal. They’re a popular choice for Christmas Eve dinner, Epiphany or a snack with tea or coffee.
