The origin and tradition of Bolo Rei
With roots in the French Gâteau des Rois, Bolo Rei was introduced to Portugal by Confeitaria Nacional in Lisbon in the 19th century. The tradition spread throughout the country, making this cake a familiar feature of Christmas celebrations.
In popular tradition, the crown shape evokes the Three Wise Men, while the colourful decoration recalls precious stones. The bean and the little gift are part of the tradition's old memories: whoever found the bean was responsible for buying the cake the following year.
