Cocoa was introduced to São Tomé by the Portuguese in the 17th century, and the archipelago was considered the world's largest cocoa producer at the end of the 19th century. For many years, this product was the driving force behind the region's economy. Four decades after independence, cocoa has once again come to be valued for its fine aroma. This region mainly produces the Amelonado variety, but also has some Trinitario cocoa beans noted for their finesse, aroma and flavour.
