Cocoa was introduced to São Tomé by the Portuguese in the 17th century, with the archipelago being considered the world’s largest cocoa producer at the end of the 19th century. For many years, this product was the driving force behind the region’s economy.
Four decades after independence, cocoa regained its value, revealing a fine aroma.
This region mainly produces the amelonado variety, but also has some Trinitario cocoa varieties of interest in terms of fineness, aroma, and flavor.
