Cocoa was introduced in São Tomé by the Portuguese in the 17th century, with the archipelago considered the world's largest cocoa producer in the late 19th century. For many years, this product was the engine of the region's economy.
Four decades after independence, cocoa is once again valued, boasting a fine aroma.
This region primarily produces the Amelonado variety but also has some Trinitario cocoas of interest in terms of fineness, aroma, and flavour.
